I hear many parents say that their teenagers are too independent. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on our own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one another’s hands for safety.

They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But the reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the

crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon—into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenager market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

60. The writer’s purpose in writing this text is to tell _________.

   A. readers how to be popular in the world

   B. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves

   C. parents how to control and guide their children

   D. people how to understand and respect each other

61. Teenagers should ___________, according to the text.

   A. rebel against their parents

   B. find their real self

   C. become different from others in as many ways as possible

   D. obey what their parents say

62. What does the underlined word “ counts” mean?

  A. To recite or list numbers.

  B. To have value or importance.

  C. To share some thoughts.

  D. To be different.

C

An election(选举,动词:elect) year is one in which all numbers are divisible(可整除的)by four — 1944, 1948, etc. Since 1840, American presidents elected in years ending in zero have been destined(命中注定的)to die in office. William Harrison, the man who served the shortest term died of illness several weeks after he took office.

Abraham Lincoln was one of the four presidents who were murdered. He was elected in 1860, and his untimely death came just five years later.

James A. Carfield was shot during his first year in office (1881) by a man to whom he wouldn’t give a job. While in his second term office (1901), William McKinley attended the Pan-American Exposition(泛美博览会)at Buffalo, New York. During the reception he was murdered(谋杀) while shaking hands with some of his guests.

Three years after his election in 1920, Warren G. Harding died in office. Although it was not proved, many believed he was poisoned.

Franklin D. Roosevelt had been elected four times (1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944), the only man to serve so long a term. He died of illness in 1945.

John F. Kennedy was murdered in 1963, only three years after his election.

Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest by a mental patient(精神病人)on March 30, 1981, shortly after he came to the White House. He was lucky enough to have a narrow escape.

George W. Bush was elected the 43rd President of the United States in 2000 and successfully won his reelection in 2004. Let’s give him all the best wishes even though he has already gone through the worst times of the American history (the attacks of September 11th).

63.   The author wrote the passage to tell us ______.
A. why many American presidents were murdered
B. how to become president in the USA
C. American presidents have been living a hard life
D. many American presidents elected in years ending in zero were murdered in office

64.   James A. Carfield was murdered because ______.
A. he was unfit for his job as president
B. he was strongly against slavery
C. he didn’t give the murderer a job
D. the murderer was a mental patient

65.   We can know that ______.
A. Lincoln died in his second term of office
B. American presidents were well protected in the old days
C. it has been found out that Warren G. Harding was poisoned
D. people in America don’t want to be president in the years ending in zero

66.   The underlined phrase “have a narrow escape” in the passage probably means in Chinese ______.
A. luckily escape death                                    B. die in the end
C. live a dangerous life                                    D. be remembered forever by the world

67.   Which of the following is not an election year in the USA?
A. 2000.                       B. 1978.                     C. 1960.                   D. 1824.

D

In the wild, an easy way to find out which direction is north is related to using a “shadow stick”. Find a place that will be in direct sunlight for several hours. Stick a pole(竿子), about 30 cm long, into the ground so that it is standing straight up. Find a small rock and place it at the end of the shadow(影子) of the pole. Leave it there for an hour, giving the shadow a chance to move. An hour later, go back and place a second small rock at the end of where the shadow is now resting. Now place your left foot on the first rock and your right foot on the second. You will be facing north.

How does this method work? The thing that makes this process confusing is the fact that we automatically(自动地)think the shadow moves in a circle. The shadow, however, does not go in a circle, but rather changes length as the earth goes around the sun. The sun travels east to west, so the shadow will travel west to east. When you put your left foot on the first rock and your right foot on the second rock, you’re putting your left foot to the west of your right foot. This means that you end up facing north.

68. This way to find out north works when it is ________.

A. windy          B. sunny                 C. winter                 D. summer

69. According to the passage, if you place your left foot on the first rock and your right foot on the second,  your right-hand side is ________.

A. east            B. west                   C. south                  D. north

70. People mistakenly think that ________.

A. the shadow moves in a circle                    B. the shadow changes length

C. the sun travels east to west                      D. the shadow travels west to east

六、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear.Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you’ve read in the papers. Some fears are reasonable, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o’clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won’t need to live in fear of it.

Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions.Fear can destroy fortunes.Fear can destroy relationships.Fear, if left uncontrolled, can destroy our lives.Fear is one of the many enemies hidden inside us.

Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum, let it slide.I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting: you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain.

The second enemy we face is indecision.Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future.Take a sword to this enemy.

The third enemy inside is doubt.Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believe everything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities.Worst of all, they doubt themselves.I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.Doubt is an enemy.Go after it.Get rid of it.

The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some.Just don’t let it defeat you.Instead, let it alarm(警示) you.Worry can be useful. If you step off the sidewalk in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner.Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it.Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.

The fifth enemy inside is overcaution. It is the timid (胆怯的) approach to life.Timidity is not a virtue; it’s an illness. If you let it go, it’ll defeat you.Timid people don’t get promoted(提拔).They don’t advance and grow. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.

Do battle with the enemies.Do battle with your fears.Build your courage to fight what’s holding you back, what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams.Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.
