Unforgettable Experience in
Wang Jing
It’s a great honor for me to be chosen to attend this training program in Canada, because I have gained a lot from this trip. During this trip, I visited many famous cities of Canada, enjoyed a lot of beautiful views, tasted different kinds of food, experienced various cultures, made new friends and had new cognition.
Firstly, my view has been broadened in this trip. This is the first time I have been abroad. I feel the world outside is large and full of secrets. During this trip I visited five famous cities of Canada—Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston and Quebec City, went to a lot of interesting places, such as CN tower, Niagara Falls, 1000 Islands, San Jose Church, the Parliament House of Canada and so on, enjoyed many beautiful views and spectacular scenes: blue sky, fresh air, clear water, old trees, buildings of different styles, great waterfalls…and heard many moving stories and interesting history introductions. What impressed me most is Niagara Falls, which is the world’s largest waterfall. It includes three parts—American Fall, Horseshoe Fall and Bridal Veil. Standing in front of the falls, we could feel the mist lightly spray onto our face as if nectar fell on our body, making us very comfortable.
Secondly, my knowledge has been increased in this trip. I have known better about Canada and Canadian culture. Canada is a large country with small population, which has 10 provinces and 3 territories. But the population of Canada is now increasing because every year many immigrants come to Canada from all over the world. They still keep their languages, traditions and cultures but different races of people can live together peacefully. All these contribute to making Canada a multicultural country. In Quebec City, people mainly speak French, live with French cultures and traditions. There are a lot of buildings of French styles. When you walk in the streets, it seems that you were in France. Chinese immigrants mainly center in the city of Toronto, so we always meet Chinese people in the streets or shopping canters, feeling very amiable.
Thirdly, my teaching concept has been renewed in this trip. We are lucky to have three wonderful teachers in this training program. They taught us many strategies about how to establish the learning environment and how to involve the students, such as Name Games, Reading Aloud to the Class, Teacher in Role and so on, through drama. They also taught us Canadian culture and literature, showed us how to plan and teach a lesson. All of them are active, full of passion and good at performance. Thanks to their efforts, every day I could make some progress in teaching. They often lit the sparkle of wisdom in my mind. Here I only want to mention one of the methods I like—Quote. The literature and culture teacher always showed us a quote at the beginning of a class. She wanted us to understand the method she would use in the class. For example, a Native American Saying says that “Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.” From this quote, we know if we only ask the students to listen with their ears, or read with their mouths, or touch with their hands, it will not make them remember deeply. We teachers need to make a real situation to put the students in. they say because they need to say; they laugh because they feel happy. We also have the opportunity to attend various lectures and visit several schools in Toronto. The biggest harvest in this trip is that I have known more about Canadian education system, Canadian education perspective, advanced teaching methods and reasonable classroom organization. We find the differences between Chinese and Canadian education. Canadian teachers mainly nurture students’ skills of different aspects and develop students’ imagination and originality. Their classes tend to be more lively and interesting.
Fourthly, my soul has been purified in this trip. For the first time I left my homeland and came to a strange country, I felt very worried and frightened at the beginning. But gradually I became relieved and happy. When we got lost in the street, Canadians enthusiastically guided for us. When we met with troubles, our teachers and classmates initiatively reached out their hands and helped us. Everywhere we could see friendly people and sincere smiling faces.
In a word, this trip is worthwhile, which combines study with entertainment. The two-month life in Canada is colorful and meaningful.
The grass withers,
The flower fades,
But the memory of my stay in Canada stands for ever…
