A teaching design for Unit 1 Module 4 Advertisements
Demonstrator: Tu Liangchun Class: Class16, Grade One, Tianyin
Time:
Teaching Aims: By the end of this class, the students will be able to
1. know how to read expository writing (说明文).
2. know the two main types of advertisements and their similarities and differences.
3.form proper attitudes to advertisements.
Teaching Procedures:
Part One: Lead-in
Step 1: Ask students to decide what kind of product or idea is being advertised.
Step 2: Ask the students which advertisement they like better and why.
(This part is to arouse the students’ interest and lead to the topic of the passage. )
Part Two: Reading Comprehension
Step 1: Fast read for a general idea and answer some questions:
(1) What is an advertisement?
(2) What do PSAs aim to do?
Step 2: Learn the reading strategy to improve the students’ reading skills of expository writing.
Step 3: Read Para 1-2 for introduction of subject.
(1) Finish some questions to understand the passage.
1) Where are advertisements usually found?
2) How many main types of advertisements are there?
(2)Decide whether the ads are CAs or PSAs.
Step 4: Read Para 3-4 for supporting details.
(1)Fill the form of structure, and do true or false questions and translation.
1) Subject:Even if an ad does not lie, it does not mean it tells you the complete truth .
Supporting details:A toothpaste ad
A grocery food ad
Conclsion:We must not fall for this kind of trick.
2) True or false statements:

4)Group work:If our class is going to have a show in the English Festival of our school, please design an advertisement and write a slogan (标语) for our class and give us your explanations.
Step 5: Read Para 5 for conclusion.
Author’s suggestions: When we want to buy the product or service the advertisement promotes, we must all use our intelligence and not be a slave to them.
Step 6: Revision of the structure of the text.
Step 7: Help students to sum up what they have learned about advertisements by filling the passage.

Part Three: Critical thinking
(1) Ask the students to have a discussion about what positive and negative effects advertisements have on our life.
(This serves as a consolidating exercise for students to practise their spoken English. Encourage them to discuss freely and bravely in English and then ask some students to express themselves.This also helps the students form proper attitudes towards ads. )
Part Four: Summary & Homework
(1) Help the students to have a revision of what they have learned in this class.
1) We’ve learned something about advertisements, especially the differences between commercial advertisements and PSAs .
2 ) We can have our own attitudes towards advertisements now.
3 ) We’ve learned how to read expository writing.
(2) Write a composition about the positive and negative effects that advertisemnts have on our life.
